Obituary for
Lola C. Connaughton
Lola C. (Simpson) Connaughton, 95, passed away at home Saturday September 10, 2016. She was the daughter of Waldo Simpson and Ellen (Ellstrom). Her husband Eugene J. "Joe" Connaughton passed away in 2000. She is survived by her son E. Joseph Connaughton and his wife Carol, her daughters Ellen Connaughton, Beth Berger, Kara Connaughton and Kimberly Wooten and her husband James, her sisters Chloris Simpson, Jessie Larter and Jane Rathburn, brothers Waldo and John Simpson, four grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Lola was born July 28, 1921 in Worcester. Her roots were in Shrewsbury where she attended school in a one-room schoolhouse. She moved to Grafton where she attended Grafton High School playing center for the basketball team and also catcher for the champion Cinamonettes Softball team. She went on to graduate from Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and worked as a Physician's Assistant for a year before she joined the US Army Air Corps where she was a 1st Lieutenant. She saw duty in England, Scotland, France, Germany and Italy as a Nurse Anesthetist. She was transferred to Vienna, Austria once the fighting in Europe ceased. Following her military discharge she enjoyed life being single for a time and then married her husband Joe and they raised their 5 children together in Grafton. She worked for many years in the ICU at Memorial Hospital as a Registered Nurse. She spent many summers on the beaches of Wells, Maine. She belonged to the Memorial Hospital Alumni Association, volunteered with Meals on Wheels for several years and was a member of the Methodist Church in North Grafton and its Bible Book Club and more recently attended the Baptist Church of Grafton. In lieu of flowers please honor Lola with a donation to The Grafton Food Bank PO Box 321 Grafton, MA 01519. All are welcome to gather with Lola's family for calling hours Wednesday September 14th from 4pm to 7pm at Roney Funeral Home 152 Worcester St. N. Grafton, MA 01536. Her funeral service will be Thursday September 15th at 11:00am at The Baptist Church of Grafton 1 South St. Grafton, MA 01519. All attending the funeral service are politely requested to go directly to the church. She will then be laid to rest with military honors at Pine Grove Cemetery in North Grafton.
